PHILIP ANSELMO Launches 'Secret' Death Metal Project, Begins Work On New SUPERJOINT RITUAL Music

May 18, 2015

Former PANTERA and current DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo revealed during a question-an-answer session at this past weekend's the Spooky Empire horror convention in Orlando, Florida that he has launched "a secret death metal project with some secret other guys from across the equator." He also stated that he is writing new material for his reactivated SUPERJOINT RITUAL project as well as his solo band, which goes by the name PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS.

Video footage of Anselmo's Spooky Empire question-an-answer session can be seen below.

In a 2012 interview with Terrorizer magazine, Anselmo said about his varied musical taste: "I am a lover of all sorts of music but really my heart is ... really I love extreme music, underground music, whether it be grindcore, death metal, thrash, black metal, [or whatever other] subgenre, and I find beauty in a lot of this stuff."

SUPERJOINT RITUAL reunited last year for an appearance at the 2014 edition of Anselmo and true crime author Corey Mitchell's groundbreaking horror-meets-metal extravaganza, the Housecore Horror Film Festival, which was held October 23-26, 2014 in Emo's in Austin, Texas. For legal reasons, the band performed at the event under the abbreviated moniker SUPERJOINT.

The band's lineup for the show was as follows:

* Philip Anselmo - Vocals
* Kevin Bond - Guitar
* Jimmy Bower (DOWN, EYEHATEGOD) - Guitar
* José Manuel Gonzales (WARBEAST, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS) - Drums
* Stephen Taylor (PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS) - Bass

Anselmo also toured Europe last year with his backup band THE ILLEGALS — guitarist Marzi Montazeri (ex-SUPERJOINT RITUAL),drummer José Manuel Gonzales (WARBEAST) and bassist Stephen Taylor.

Anselmo's career-first solo album, "Walk Through Exits Only", sold around 8,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 35 on The Billboard 200 chart.
